This week's article is from The Age - 'Italy, Rooney the best of the Cup's worst' by Michael Lynch. The article explores the cup's failures and how things went so wrong for some of soccer's biggest names. We have now, as Sir Alex Ferguson once famously remarked as Manchester United faced a crucial run in to another Premiership season, arrived at ''squeaky bum time''.
The World Cup is well into its third week, and there are now only seven matches left that really count: four quarter-finals, two semis and the big one itself. Nobody really pays too much heed to the third- and fourth-place play-off, which tends to give coaches of the beaten semi-finalists a chance to give the players who have not had much of a run a start when little is at stake.
So we know who the big achievers are - Ghana, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Netherlands, Germany, Paraguay and Spain - the teams that have made the last eight.
Of those Germany, Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil and Spain would have expected such a performance as the minimum acceptable.
Uruguay and Ghana, which meet in Johannesburg on Saturday (4.30am, AEST) with a place in the semi-finals at stake, would have almost certainly accepted a quarter-final spot before the tournament kicked off, while Paraguay will be happy to have improved on its previous best performance of reaching the round of 16.
But for every team that does well, there is another that fares badly. With South American nations having done so well in this competition, the flip side has been disappointment for Europe....
